Michigan is a great destination for those that love the outdoors, particularly the water, given that it contains more freshwater than any other state in America. With over 3,200 miles of coastline including both private and public access to over four of the five Great Lakes, 11,000 inland lakes, and plenty of rivers and streams, Michigan is prime real estate for those seeking a relaxing, waterfront getaway. Sailing, paddle boating, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and even scuba diving to sunken ships nestled in underwater preserves, are easily accessible. Its 1,300 miles of bike trails through varied terrain make it a mountain biker’s paradise. The same goes for hunters and trappers, whether hunting for game birds, waterfowl, small game, fur trapping, or big game deer. Fishermen will enjoy luring in the plentiful bass, salmon, walleye, and trout, just to name a few. Skiing is popular here too, with over 40 ski resorts in the northern part of the state and Upper Peninsula. Michigan also has over 3,100 miles of off-road trails for motorcycles and ATVs. And if spectator sports are more your speed, there’s plenty of NASCAR and Indy car racing at Michigan International Speedway. You can also catch horse races at Great Lakes Downs. In the evenings, few things can compare to a relaxing dinner cruise on the lakes or a ride on a dinner train while dining on the catch of the day, like fresh lake perch, a local favorite. So grab your gear and head north to Michigan. You won’t be disappointed.

All About Alaska

When I think of Alaska I think of a cold barren place with lots of ice and snow, and maybe some igloos. Apparently there is more to Alaska than I thought.

Located in the upper northwest region of the North American continent, Alaska is the largest U.S. state by area (larger than the combined area of the next 3 largest states: Texas, California, and Montana) and one of the wealthiest and most racially diverse. Go figure!

Alaska is actually quite a beautiful place with 17 of the top 20 highest peaks in the United States. The icy state also boasts natural wonders like the Yukon River, the third longest river in the U.S. and glaciers like Malaspina the largest in the state.

According to the official state website there are three big misconceptions about Alaska.

Weather is the #1 misconception. Over a third of all vacation/pleasure visitors found the weather better than expected. During the summer, average daytime temperatures throughout the state range from the 60s to the 90s.

Road conditions are usually better than expected. Almost the entire length of the Alaska Highway is asphalt-surfaced, and approximately half of the roads in the state’s highway system are paved.

The third misconception is price. Contrary to popular belief, prices throughout Alaska are generally quite reasonable.

Who knew Alaska could be so pleasant? Next time, I take a vacation I just go to Alaska. It sure sounds a like a great place with plenty of natural wonders to take in.
